Many believe the Kilt Pin came to be when Queen Victoria, while visiting Balmoral Castle and inspecting a regiment of kilted Scottish soldiers, fastened her broach on the kilt of a soldier struggling to keep his kilt from blowing in the wind.
This bit of trivia cannot be proved or disproved; though, in fact, the kiltpin today is not worn to hold the two aprons of the kilt together, but purely as ornamentation. In fact, wearing a kiltpin through both aprons can cause the tartan to rip when sitting or otherwise stressed, and will also affect the way the fabric of the kilt lays, causing it to pucker, especially when walking.
Instead, wear the pin as an accessory, a statement of your personal fashion or as a badge adorned with your family crest or other decoration. Fasten the pin about 8 to 10cm above the hem of your kilt, on the right side, and only through the fabric of the outer apron.
