The ruche is very similar to a cravat, the only difference being the knot of a ruche features a ruffled/ scrunched-up effect. The cravat is a neckband, originating from Croatia in the 17th century. Like most men's fashions between the 17th century and World War I, it was of military origin. It is also possible that cravats were initially worn to hide shirts which were not immaculately clean.
